Chapter 6

I plump up the cushion on Trent’s sofa and look across to the clock on the wall.

“What time is he coming?” I ask. I shuffle on the spot.

Trent shrugs and places his hands in his pockets.

I can tell he’s nervous, but then so am I. Meeting his brother is a big deal, I know it is. Especially since he’s only doing it to appease me. I hope that it goes well and doesn’t end up a disaster or I’ll never get Trent to invite anyone over again.

I adjust my skirt and wipe down the invisible wrinkles in my top. This is the first time we’ve had company.

We. I smile to myself. I’m calling us ‘we’ now so I guess that means we are officially a couple and not just two people having sex. I haven’t been in a relationship for so long that it feels strange. I glance over at Trent who sits down on the sofa and then stands back up. “I’ll order dinner,” he says. “So it will be here when he arrives.”

“You should have let me cook.” I smile brightly. “It would have been no trouble.”

Trent chuckles to himself. “I don’t want you to be my chef, I pay people for that.”

“Oh, I know what you want me for.” I sway my hips seductively and he grins as his gaze rakes up and down my body. I expect he’s thinking about our day and how many times he made me come. I’m surprised either of us has the strength to stand right now.

Trent walks over to the top drawer in the kitchen and pulls out a menu. I’m not close enough to see what option he’s chosen and I frankly don’t care. Food is the last thing on my mind.

I walk outside onto the deck and let the cool breeze temper my nerves. The sun still lights the sky, but it’s gently falling toward the ground, soon it’ll be night and soon I’ll be meeting Reeve, Trent’s half brother.

Craning my neck over the side of the ledge I look over to the boardwalk to see if I can see anyone on it heading in this direction.

From this distance I can tell someone is there, but I can’t see close enough to tell if it’s Reeve. I’m sure it is though when I see them walk toward the front of the street. The only reason you’d walk along that street is if you were coming to one of the houses along the shore. There is nothing else further up and nowhere to go except back down.

As he nears the fence that separates the houses from the beach I see that he’s carrying a bottle. I quickly go inside.

Trent finishes on the phone.

“I think he’s here.”

Trent swallows and holds onto the counter for support. I don’t know whether he’s steadying himself because it’s been so long since he saw his brother or if there is something else that’s happened between them. It could simply be that it’s been a long time since he’s had anyone inside the house before.
